I have a theory that dragons are actually a form of dinosaur that had survived and evolved (wings like a pterodactyl, face, and teeth and scales of every dragon ever). Birds were originally dinosaurs, so what's to keep dragons from being real at some point in time? It would explain the fact that dragons are all over the place. Also, the reason they're extinct: Humans. (i.e. "nights in shining armor") I love this theory and would be happy to discuss it more

As I recall the "dragon sickness" that affected Thorin was more so a movie thing. In the books his decline was more directly linked to his grandfather, Thror, and what caused his downfall: one of the seven dwarven rings of power, which was linked to (and to some extent corrupted by) Sauron's One Ring. This was exacerbated by Thorin's preexisting character flaws, which are discussed in a passage in Tolkien's Unfinished Tales. The movies did some... strange things with the story of The Hobbit.

The fact that basically every human culture had stories about dragons suggests that dragons actually did exist back then, and for some reason they are hiding from humans since the modern era. Sounds like a great urban fantasy story.

I once read somewhere there was a theory that the reason dragons were universal is cause every now and then in any part of the world someone would dig up a dinosaur head and recognize it as serpent like, giant, and extinct. That's also why there's such a variety cause like, they might find four legs, they might find two, they might find none! And in the same boat they might find three skulls close and think it the same creature. Just a thought.

And don't forget they can also have dog face: Falkor.

That’s an interesting perspective on it, that dragon is a grouping rather than a single “””species””” of creature.
The term is more like “Undead” than “Vampire”; a statement of qualities with a lot of variation within
Not to say vampires don’t have their variation but- you get what I’m trying to say

There is no 'actual' or 'official' definition. There never has been, and attempts to enforce one are fantastic examples of the worst of geek culture.

"It's not a dragon, it's a wyvern!" is an annoying statement I see every now and then when a live-action show/movie adapts what the books clearly states is a DRAGON. Even a wyvern is still a dragon. Just because it's short of 2 legs doesn't make it any less a dragon.
kunik61 - 15 hours ago
Same. Like... Eastern Dragons are wing-less. Still dragons. (I have zero problems with that) Falcor is more like a snake-dog mix. Still a dragon. Rosa NEVER transforms into a dragon. Still a dragon. A dragon has 2 legs. IT IS NOT A DRAGON. Like the heck?
Cristopher Kingston
We need to mention Fire Emblem's dragons, they are powerful benevolent god like creatures who can transform in a human form with dragon's parts but they get mad as old they get so they kill themselves to avoid hurt people or go into the madness and start killing everything that moves, so is a mix between the benevolent dragons and greedy dragons stereotypes
JayStorm - Day ago
I don't think Dragons are 'special' becuase it can be anything, you could say that to Demons, Yokai, Fairy, etc and yet they
didn't catch on like Dragons did. But the Iconic Power and the Mighty feeling, dragons can give you. That, i think is why Dragons are so popular (Same with Gods too).

There is one bit of dragon rider folklore from Transylvania that predates Dragon Riders of Pern. It's related to the legend of Scholomance, the school of black magic. The dragon riders (Solomonari) could control the weather and cause storms, which seems to be a twist on the storm god vs. dragon theme. I never made that connection until watching this video.

About Dragon Riding, I believe there are precedents in Eastern Mythologies and Religions. Sheshanaga, for example, serves as a resting place for Vishnu. Bodhisattvas in Buddhism are often depicted as standing on Dragons to travel and help the people. There’s also Sanzang, who rides a Dragon (albeit in the shape of a horse).
In certain East Asian countries, Crocodiles and turtles are also sometimes classified as types of dragons. While no crocodile rider comes to mind, a lot of Saint-like and deities in East Asian cultures do ride Turtles.

"It's seriously everywhere, i don't know why" because.... dinosaurs! Different species of dinos were found in different regions, which is why dragons seem to have so many different characteristics (# of wings, legs, horns, etc) and most dinos are pretty big, so it's not a huge leap to 'powerful and important.' Add in human curiosity and a penchant for storytelling and you get dragons

Dragons are awesome.
Storm gods can attack dragons from a distance, prolly can float/fly and their attacks can't be melted by scorching venom/fire. Since dragons in a lot of cultures are water adjacent creatures it wouldn't make sense for a water god to slay them and since the ones that aren't water related normally can fly it wouldn't make sense either as they will just fly away, earth god's (as a trope) like all living things and you can't combat fire with fire, specially not when your opponent has thick scaly armour. They can fly so wind alone wouldn't work out either as demonstrated by birds that just happily fly to the eye of the tornado unscathed. Dragons don't work like humans so any psychology type god is out of the way, magic/knowledge gods would have trouble defeating a thousands of years old beast with a lot of wisdom and tricks of their own. Dragons are the definition of power and by sheer size of fiscal force so some super strong brute wouldn't cut it (except they are usually humans and humans like to see other humans win against the big scary). In other words the only thing bigger, scarier, angrier and that could objectively win we could think of is sky temper tantrums.

Working theory:
Dragons everywhere: dinosaur skeletons.
Dragons vs. Storm Gods: dinosaur skeletons found in marshes, bogs, places that look like they've been flooded, or where a flood has removed a lot of sediment concealing dinosaur fossils.

Sky god vs dragon is actually an allegory of order vs chaos. A lot of cultures revere sky gods as the ones in charge of maintaining order in the universe because powers over sky which is what us humans can’t reach means ultimate status for gods. So it’s the storm gods with their power and status that are given the job of maintaining order in the cosmos and the dragon serves as a symbol of chaos and evil. The dragon in question is also usually a water or underworld serpent because most people view water and the sea as powerful but violent and unpredictable and the underworld is basically dangerous and deadly. Snakes/dragons are the monsters usually because of most venomous snakes, the violent tendencies of some snakes and the way snakes move like ripples of water. So when you have sky/storm god vs dragon it basically means opposites in conflict: order vs chaos, sky vs Earth (or water), good vs evil etc. note: the term usually used for this conflict is called chaoskampf which basically means struggle with chaos or overcoming the monster. Also check out Harry Potter chamber of secrets and you see the same struggle and trope when Harry fights the basilisk which is a big venomous snake lives in the flooded chamber and saves Ginny Weasley (his future wife)

Could be that Dragon vs Storm God is so common because it is some kind of meaning of Dragons being long living Mortal that tries for immortality by trying to overtake gods only for the Storm to act as a cage that keeps dragons forcibly grounded so they can't reach the golden realm of the gods. But as for why there are so many dragons, i would say it is because lizards are everywhere, as long as it isn't below a certain temperature, there will always be a lizard slithering or walking somewhere

Trope Talk: Orphans? There are just a lot of orphan characters in fiction that seem to come in two types either a Moses/superman type or a more batman type I think it be interesting to talk about.
1ofthem !!!
1ofthem !!! - 2 days ago
@FRANKLIN Z Right but most of those kinds of characters do have parents, there just not mentioned, not important or not involved in the polt or would raise some questionable stuff in the story if they were involved because as you mentioned that would make them terrible parents. Many anime high school romances do mention parents and if they do mostly have them as minor background characters that don't do much. The characters do have parents but they aren't important enough in the story to be brought up. I'm mainly talking about characters that are actual orphans. Which as I stated before comes in three types. The Adopted Orphan (ex: Moses, Superman, Spider-Man, Harry Potter), The Traumatic Orphan (Ex: Batman, Daredevil,) or the Half Orphan (EX: Nemo, Chuckie Finster, Max Goof)
FRANKLIN Z - 2 days ago
@1ofthem !!! Typically in anime high school kids has to make life decisions, has a harem, regularly face life-threatening battles, needs to save the world, gets badly injured, kills people, etc. Having parents around will either crash the world building or make them terrible parents.
1ofthem !!!
1ofthem !!! - 2 days ago
I also forgot another type of Orphan. The Half Orphan.
1ofthem !!!
1ofthem !!! - 2 days ago
@FRANKLIN Z Many of those could just mean that the parents aren't an important factor of the story may be because the character in question is too old for parents to matter or some other reason. Or it could just boil down to the Moses/superman type which we can just simply call the Adopted type as many of those characters may have a mentor/parental figure that took them in
FRANKLIN Z - 2 days ago
@1ofthem !!! Look at all the JRPGs and anime. Although in anime the parents are usually away on vacation (for years until it is time for the love interest to meet them).

You know thinking about it maybe the whole "dragon is killed by storm god" comes from the fact that dragon scales are often portrayed as being extremely durable, so perhaps people thought that only something like a bolt of lightning could pierce them and storm gods are often shown as being among the strongest in their pantheon. But hey what do I know.

Why dragon? Because they exist! Not a the winged scally fire breathing one but the giant serpent/ lizard tingy one. I mean giant serpents that devour humans are real (anaconda, phyton, etc.) And they might more common in the ancient days. You have giant lizards like komodo and crocodiles/alligators that can make any prehistorian seing them as some type of godly creature (first they are majestic and second they dont really attack/pursue you outside of their domain unlike the common predatory animal).
