Behavior and Belief
Year ago
How can a lie become true? In this episode, Dr. Aaron Blaisdell and I create a game show that is actually a giant “human Skinner Box” to observe the formation of superstitious beliefs. And Dr. Samuel Veissière helps me design and perform a placebo reverse exorcism, harnessing the power of belief in both science and religion to convince normal people that a spirit has possessed their bodies. Are we alone in the universe? Even if we could contact aliens, what would we say? How would we say it? And, most importantly, should we even be trying to make contact at all? This episode takes me on a journey to compose and send my own personal message into outer space. Available with USa-video Premium - usa-video.net/u/premiumoriginals. If I could live forever, should I? How does being reminded of our own mortality affect us psychologically? In this episode I speak with mortician and death positivity activist Caitlin Doughty and visit a cryonics facility trying to extend human life indefinitely. Will I take them up on their offer, or will I choose to die? Available with USa-video Premium - usa-video.net/u/premiumoriginals. The Stanford Prison Experiment
The Stanford Prison Experiment

Normal people can become monsters given the right situation. That’s the standard narrative of the Stanford Prison Experiment, one of the most famous psychological experiments of all time. But what if the cause of its participants’ cruel behavior wasn’t what we’ve always been told?
The Stilwell Brain
The Stilwell Brain
Year ago
There are 100 billion individual neurons in the human brain. Working together, they allow us to make sense of, and move through, the world around us. Scientists have built replicas of the human brain with computers, but no one has ever successfully made a brain out of humans. On this episode, I’ll travel back to my hometown of Stilwell, Kansas, and turn it into a working brain! Available with USa-video Premium - usa-video.net/u/premiumoriginals. Moral Licensing
Moral Licensing
Year ago
How are our moral decisions influenced by factors we’re not aware of? A phenomenon known as Moral Licensing claims that when we do something good, we often subconsciously allow ourselves to then do something bad. In this episode, I take a look at whether those who donate money to charity become more likely to let a kid take the blame for a crime they know they committed. The Electric Brain - Mind Field S2 (Ep 8)
The Electric Brain - Mind Field S2 (Ep 8)
Our nervous system is fundamentally electric. We move our arm by sending a signal to the muscles that control it. That means we can bypass our brains and use electricity to control our bodies, or use our minds to control other bodies. In this episode, I explore how we can use electricity and our brains to control cockroaches, move other people’s limbs, restore motion to people who are paralyzed, and even read people’s minds. Divergent Minds - Mind Field S2 (Ep 7)

Scientists can’t dissect living people’s brains to study their function. But by examining the behavior of people whose brains are atypical (due to stroke, injury, or being born that way), we can learn a lot about all our brains. In this episode, I travel to London to meet a blind, autistic savant with astonishing musical abilities, and I volunteer to have my own brain’s function temporarily disrupted at UCLA’s Neuromodulation Lab. Exactly how do placebos work? Researchers believe that, through the power of suggestion, placebos may unleash the power of our own subconscious minds to cure ourselves. I was honored to participate in McGill University’s groundbreaking study of an accessory-assisted placebo. How to Make a Hero - Mind Field S2 (Ep 5)

What makes a hero? Dr. Philip Zimbardo, the psychologist behind the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment, now runs seminars to teach everyday people how to be heroes. But can heroism be learned? I put his unsuspecting students into a fake crisis situation to see if they would act heroically. Also, I asked employees to help me run a seemingly dangerous experiment, to see if they would blow the whistle to stop me. Available with USa-video Premium - usa-video.net/u/premiumoriginals. In Your Face - Mind Field (Ep 7)

How much do we communicate through facial expressions? Are our expressions affected by our moods, or is it the other way around? And what happens to your ability to relate to others when your facial muscles are frozen by Botox? In this episode of Mind Field, I take a look at what’s In Your Face. Touch - Mind Field (Ep 6)

How much of the sensations we feel is determined by our physical bodies? Maybe our minds play a bigger role than we know. I’ll see if people can be tricked into feeling intense physical pain, even though it’s all in their heads. I’ll also look at a machine that makes it possible for you to tickle yourself, and I’ll show you a weird physical illusion you can do at home. Freedom of Choice - Mind Field (Ep 5)

We may value having Freedom of Choice, but are we actually happier when we have limited choices...or even no choice at all? Do we truly have control over our decisions, or are they really predetermined by other forces? My fellow USa-videors and I have our minds read by a “box” that reveals who - or what - is really calling the shots. Available with USa-video Premium - usa-video.net/u/premiumoriginals. ***NOTE*** This video was originally uploaded in 2013 but has been unavailable for more than a year! Basically, a channel I shouted-out in the first version asked to be removed. That's okay! Now, in a slightly re-edited version, the video is back! And space-ownership is STILL a major unresolved issue that deserves attention. What if the Moon was a Disco Ball?
What if the Moon was a Disco Ball?
DISCO BALL MOON INFORMATION: The large mirror-tiles are 150km squared, and the small ones are 100km squared. They are all 10 km thick with glass (with an IOR of 1.56) There are 3012 mirrored tiles When as near as the ISS, the Earth surface to disco-ball-moon surface distance is 420 km or so The orbital period in relation to the earth is realistic, about a 2.1 hour period. When the disco moon is in low orbit, each reflection of the sun as a caustic is effectively a tiny sun, although you can never reflect enough light to get above the temperature of the surface of the sun (about 6000 degrees). Since the sunlight is going through glass first, glass will in general filter out a lot of the UV, so your caustics shouldn't reflect too much UV. The projection of a mirror-tile is larger than the projection of the sun when seen from low altitude. . when seen from far away the tile is smaller than the sun, and hence the caustic isn't as bright . Basically the disco tiles are glass with a silvered backing. Some of the light will not penetrate the glass, and will be simply reflected off the first surface of the glass, This reflection strength increases as the angle of incidence approaches 90, generally referred to as a Fresnel reflection.. or rather the strength follows that equation. This reflected light will generally be full spectrum The center of the giant flat mirror is orbiting at a distance of 2157.4 Km above the Surface of the earth, It's diameter is 3474.8 km (same as the moon), It's orbital period would be longer than the disco moon simply because it has less mass. But in this video it has the same orbital period as in the moon. The actual mass of the giant mirror is absurd.. it's way over-engineered.. if a real one were to be built it wouldn't have huge thick rims, it would more likely resemble a girder work, with Mylar films. Not huge death star like mirror with towers, and strobe lights (and a strange lack of solar panels) Follow me on twitter! twitter.com/tweetsauce or instagram: instagram.com/electricpants and subscribe to Vsauce for more: usa-video.net/u/vsauce visuals by YETI DYNAMICS: usa-video.net/u/yetidynamics music by JAKE CHUDNOW: usa-video.net/u/JakeChudnow

From CDC.GOV - Look at table 1 and focus specifically on "DEATHS FROM ALL CAUSES" - notice how before COVID-19(84) it averaged close to 60,000 per week, goes up to the 70,000 range for about 6 weeks and then (May 23rd, 2020) drops down to the 60,000 range again and remains below 60,000. The week of July 25th 2020 is only 44,290 (data as of August 7th, 2020). FROM CDC.GOV - www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/COVID19/index.htm

Not to criticize, but do people really need an educational to understand down is a matter of perspective? I thought newtons theory was enough to get the point. Picking up a rock and then a heavier rock is enough for most. Going down a slide vs sitting on a steep asphalt road. Like I said, I'm not criticizing, but are kids these days really that stupid? I'm sure like me, you understood most of this in kindergarten. Mass, velocity, centrical force, buoyancy, specific gravity, terminal velocity, resistance, ect, ect, are a different issue. As are the formula's to calculate them. It got far more interesting to me when you got into curvature. Reminded me of conversations I had with my late father in-law. He was an electrical engineer/missile technology engineer. Discussing how pilots used to have to constantly calculate and do zig zag patterns to reach destinations. Yet now with global positioning they do not. I do have a problem with the space time theory as you stated it however. Consider this a moment if you will. What if you were on a planetary body in the middle of deep space, past all gravitational influences of our solar system, perfectly motionless, would gravity exist? From my understanding this would be impossible to simulate with current mathematical calculations or scientific understanding. We have no way to simulate such an environment, and thus verify the outcome of such a test. All we have in conjecture. From my understanding it's gravity that creates the curvature, not the curvature creating gravity. This leads me back to subatomic attraction being the force attracting bodies together, not curvature. Curvature would be a resistance to this force. Additionally your perspective to this curvature would be different depending on where you were on the planet, as would your perspective to all other gravitational sources. Yet ocean tides are entirely predictable. I know this video is a few years old, and have no idea if you read comments, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Or anyone else for that matter. I did enjoy the vid, you got a thumbs up from me. I am just curious though, how many people truly do not get the simpler aspects you started with?
