Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. #seflreliance #goldenretriever #camp Cali, my golden retriever, and I take a break from the log cabin to explore the forest and lakes around the outpost camp, the future location for my trappers cabin, traveling by canoe and by foot. We catch a few fish, keeping two smallmouth bass for dinner that I cook over the campfire on top of a bedrock cliff at the outpost camp. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. First Hot Sauna in the Forest | Off Grid Log Cabin Life
First Hot Sauna in the Forest | Off Grid Log Cabin Life
7 days ago
Now that the off grid, wood fired sauna in the forest is relatively airtight and the roof is insulated with moss, it gets up to 80 degrees Celsius (176F) quickly and without too much wood, higher if I crank the wood stove and give the cedar logs of the log cabin walls time to heat up. It's time to finish the interior now, so I smoked the deer hide that was hanging on the wood shed to dry it back out and I hung it on the wall of the change room area of the bathhouse. I will be adding a sink, bench and firewood store in here as well. With summer winding down, I have a lot to do around the wilderness homestead but the weather and scenery is just to perfect to keep working. I am taking more time this fall to go for long hikes in the forest, exploring waterfalls, fishing, hunting and practicing archery. This is why I embarked on this life simplification and off grid, wilderness lifestyle to begin with and I need to start enjoying my freedom more. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Cast Iron Cooking in the Off Grid Forest Kitchen | Corn Bread and Beans | Axe Repair
Cast Iron Cooking in the Off Grid Forest Kitchen | Corn Bread and Beans | Axe Repair
11 days ago
#offgrid #castiron #cooking Hard at it (not really) in the Forest Kitchen, this time I make vegetarian baked beens with corn bread, baked in the primitive earthen oven with maple and cherry wood for added flavor. It's almost vegetarian - if you look closely, you may notice a couple of pieces of leftover bear sausages thrown in there. I talk about my axe and firewood too, making a few small repairs between checking on the meal in the oven. In case you're seriously interested in the recipes (if you can call them recipes), here they are; Baked Beans 2 cups any dried beans - soaked overnight or simmered for a couple of hours ahead of time 1 onion 1 can of tomatoes 2 cups of water 1/2 cup of maple sugar or maple syrup (NOT corn syrup) Random fresh vegetables To taste - garlic, Old Bay seasoning, pepper, hot sauce, hot peppers, salt, pepper, hot sauce... Simmer until beans are soft. Better the next day Corn Bread (I doubled this recipe) (I found this online somewhere, no recollection of when and where) INGREDIENTS * 1cup cornmeal * 1⁄2cup flour * 1teaspoon salt * 1teaspoon maple sugar * 1⁄2cup milk * 1⁄2cup boiling water * 3tablespoons cooking oil * 1egg * 1 1⁄2teaspoons baking powder DIRECTIONS * Grease an 8-inch round or square baking pan. Preheat oven to 425. Place pan in oven to preheat. * Combine cornmeal, flour, salt, and sugar in mixing bowl. Add corn oil and use a cutting motion with spoon so that oil will be well blended with other ingredients. Add the boiling water and mix well. * Add cold milk and stir. Let stand for a few minutes until batter has cooled to room temperature. * Mix in egg and then baking powder; beat briskly. * Remove preheated pan from oven and pour in batter. Bake until lightly browned (approx. 20 minutes). Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Please subscribe. 4 Dogs, 4 Guys Build a Longhouse Using Hand Tools and Natural Materials | Bushcraft
Month ago
#bushcraft #logcabin #handtools We return to the Native American longhouse with our four dogs, not sure whether the bark we harvested from dying ash trees earlier this summer will be still useable, not dried out and cracked and whether or not we collected enough to complete the primitive bushcraft shelter using hand tools and natural materials. The dogs continue to work out the hierarchy, Cali my Golden Retriever protecting her home territory from Bella, Buck and Finn, dog's belonging to Ted Baird, Jim Baird and Doug Linker. We are rained out for half a day and we spend that time cooking ribs in the forest kitchen and we end the day with hot chicken wings, fries and a bear roast for dinner cooked on the campfire. Proenneke's Log Cabin Tour | Off Grid Cabins in Alaska | My Perspective
Proenneke's Log Cabin Tour | Off Grid Cabins in Alaska | My Perspective
Month ago
#logcabin #offgrid #Alaska A complete tour of Dick Proenneke's log cabin on upper Twin Lakes in Alaska, including his elevated log cache, his woodshed and the neighboring cabins owned by Spike and Hope Carrithers and Weiser. See the inside of the cabin, the woodworking details up close, the tools and other gear he used to live off grid at Twin Lakes for 30 years. Throughout the video, I pause during my hikes in the surrounding mountains and while inspecting the log buildings to reflect on Proenneke's life, his undertakings, what I like about his homestead, what I don't like and would do differently and his influence on me. Richard L. Proenneke was an inspiration not only because of the basic home that he built and that he stayed in it for almost thirty years, but also for his thrift, resourcefulness, self reliance, perseverance and connection with nature. What I was pleasantly surprised about after reading more of his story and talking to the people in town who knew him well, was that he was not a hermit and actually liked people, socializing often. He hosted many guests, some just for the day and some overnighters, including family, friends, hikers, park staff and others. He visited family and friends in Port Alsworth, Primrose Iowa and California, where his brother Raymond lived. He spent the last five years of his life in California with his brother before passing away in 2003. His ashes were scattered on what is now known as Proenneke Peak, a mountain behind his log cabin. Awkwardly, I spend an hour at the end explaining how Dick Proenneke inspired me to build my off grid homestead, including my log cabin, forest kitchen, log cabin sauna, wood shed and upcoming buildings including a timber frame workshop and root cellar. #logcabin #offgrid #metalroof Settling back home from my log cabin tour and wildlife photography trip to Alaska, my first project is to install a new metal roof on the side porch and west side of my off grid log cabin in the Canadian wilderness, unfortunately replacing the shou sugi ban roof system in the process. Working alone has its challenges, especially when installing ice and water shield to the roof boards and handling large sheets of metal roofing as I carry them down the trail to the cabin and then lift them into place on the wood roof. Off Grid Log Home Addition | Tiny House Renovation using Hand Tools

#offgrid #logcabin #tinyhouse It's time to add on to the off grid log cabin to make it more comfortable for year round, tiny house living, especially in the summer when it's hot inside the loft of the cabin and the bugs are bad outside. I'm working alone in the forest again, climbing on the roof of the cabin, carrying logs on my shoulders and using hand tools to build an addition for eating, sleeping when it's hot and storing wood and other supplies - it feels like 2017 again when I built the first cabin here on the homestead. #wilderness #offgrid #bushcraft With an axe and other hand tools, I bushcraft a wooden door handle for the rustic door on the off grid log cabin that is my sauna, bathhouse in the forest. For dinner, I make pizza from scratch and bake it on my DIY earthen pizza oven that I built last year from sand and clay. It's late spring and I finally hack out a clearing in the forest to grow fruit and vegetables, the next step in my long path to self reliance. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Making a Unique Wood Door for a Log Cabin
Making a Unique Wood Door for a Log Cabin

Using rough cut cedar boards, ash bark and a stained glass window that my Godfather gave us for a wedding gift many years ago, I build a wood door for the front of the log cabin sauna using hand tools, traditional woodworking techniques and natural materials. This DIY door was free, costing me nothing to make. In the next log cabin episode, I install the door and handcraft a door handle out of wood and antler Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Native American Longhouse Build, Ep2 | Natural Materials, Ash Tree Bark, Bushcraft Shelter
Native American Longhouse Build, Ep2 | Natural Materials, Ash Tree Bark, Bushcraft Shelter
3 months ago
#bushcraft #shelter #logcabin 5 guys continue to build the frame of this longhouse shelter on my land using cedar logs, cedar saplings, cedar bark for cordage and ash trees for the ridge pole and for the bark siding that will cover the natural structure. Using hand tools, we cut down many dying black ash trees and strip off the bark in huge sheets for natural siding and roofing material. The ultimate natural shelter that helped native north Americans survive this harsh northern climate for thousands of years is the longhouse, a bushcraft shelter made from logs, saplings and bark, lashed together with natural cordage and heated with central pit fires. Up to dozens of families would live in this primitive hut, with each family sharing a section of the longhouse, sleeping and sitting on a large bed near the ground with tools, clothing and food stored in upper shelves and hanging from the rafters. Over the fire in front of the oversized wigwam, we spit roast four grass fed beef roasts and a leg of lamb on a maple tripod and spit, smoking the meat all day over a low smokey fire. In the evenings, we head back to my log cabin for dinner, and cook up a huge skillet of bacon and eggs for breakfast. Check back periodically, or subscribe, to see us finish the ultimate bushcraft natural shelter and then use it to practice First Nations and European bushcraft skill, including woodworking, tool making, carving, fishing, foraging, harvesting wild game, preserving food, tanning hides and making, clothing and much more. Ice and Fire | 7 Challenging Days Camping in the Canadian Wilderness
Ice and Fire | 7 Challenging Days Camping in the Canadian Wilderness

An amazing 7 rough days in Canada's Algonquin Park with the winners of History's Alone, Jim Baird and Ted Baird, costarring Buck the adventure dog. Freezing temperatures, high winds, cold rain and difficult fishing conditions challenge our ability to keep warm, start fires and to catch enough fish to keep us energized. Bull moose, loons and other wildlife accompany us as we paddle across lakes, down a flooded river for days through raging waterfalls and whitewater and then back up a steadily rising river for another couple of days. Paddling solo, we each pilot our own canoes - me in my new Swift 14' carbon Prospector, Ted in a Swift Keewaydin and Jim in a Novacraft Prospector. On day 4, we visit with Scott and Griffin of Drenalin Adventures and their friends at their amazing campsite on a beautiful Algonquin Park lake in the the heart of the park. Despite the challenging fishing conditions, we manage to land in excess of 75 brook trout, the largest by Ted, measuring 21 inches and almost 4 pounds! The Off Grid Log Cabin Sauna - Wood Floor and What's the Roof Frame For?

#logcabin #sauna #offgrid I use the sauna for the first time despite the gaps in the walls of the log cabin bathhouse that prevent it from getting up to the right temperature. I'll be curing that soon. The weather this week is great for working outside, but I've been busy doing a variety of spring projects so my progress on the sauna was limited to the floor in the change room and a frame for the live roof. I spend a few hours preparing my open-water fishing and camping gear for a spring fishing trip in the evening. I talk at the end of the video for a few minutes, explaining why I have not been doing My Self Reflections for awhile. I plan to change that. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Building a Cedar Sauna in the Forest using hand tools, Ep 23: Windows and Walls

#logcabin #sauna #offgrid What an incredible week at the log cabin in the Canadian wilderness! On Sunday and Monday, we got 6 inches of snow on top of the 3 feet that still blankets the ground, but a hot sun and seasonal, mild temperatures over the following two days finally started to melt the snowpack, making for difficult walking and sledding conditions. I fire up the woodburning stove in the Finnish sauna to melt the snow on the floor, but it's still just too cold to make melt it enough to install the wood floor. I do get one of the windows in and I build the dividing wall between the sauna/shower section and the front change area. Tune in to my other USa-video channel, Shawn James, to see where I got the aromatic cedar planks for the floor and the walls. I make a batch of about 3 gallons of maple syrup and then I pull the taps out of the trees because the weather is changing rapidly and the good sap is about over. Working up a healthy appetite working in the bush and on the sauna, I cook several hearty meals, including venison (deer) cheeseburgers, trout with maple syrup glaze, venison burger with runny eggs for breakfast, venison steaks for dinner and lunch. Two Years Alone in the Wilderness | Escape the City to Build Off Grid Log Cabin
Two Years Alone in the Wilderness | Escape the City to Build Off Grid Log Cabin
6 months ago
#logcabin #bushcraft #offgrid #survival One man leaves the city life behind to build a cheap off grid log cabin and homestead in the Canadian wilderness, including a log home, an outdoor kitchen, an outhouse, a woodshed and a sauna bathhouse. Building mostly with hand tools, Shawn James harvests building materials from the forests north of Toronto, Canada and crafts them into functional tools and shelters using traditional woodworking tools and methods. He practices bushcraft and survival skills every day, including fire starting, tree identification and harvesting, wild edible foraging, fishing, hunting, camping in the summer and winter, travelling by canoe and snowshoe, navigation and water collection and purification. Continue watching in 2019 as Shawn finishes the sauna, plants a forest garden for fruit and vegetables, builds an underground root cellar, ice house and cheese cave, a timber frame workshop and a remote hunt camp closer to fish and game. How to Build an Off Grid Log Cabin | Purlins and Roof| Lake Trout Stew | Cast Iron Cooking
How to Build an Off Grid Log Cabin | Purlins and Roof| Lake Trout Stew | Cast Iron Cooking
6 months ago
#logcabin #simplelife #offgrid Lifting the 17' log purlins into place alone proves to be difficult but manageable. I notch the gable ends to fit the purlin logs into place and then nail on full dimension 2'x4'x10' rough cut boards that I'll cut down to about 8' once they're all in place. Rather than cut down 70 saplings for rafters or ripping my stock of logs into lumber, I go into town to the mill to pick up cheap pine boards that I haul back to the cabin with the snowmobile. For dinner, I cook up a large lake trout that I caught earlier in the week, frying it along with vegetables the first night and then making a spicy stew with the leftovers. Breakfast is the usual high calorie winter meal - bacon, avocado, cheese and eggs, quail eggs on the first morning and organic chicken eggs the following morning. Lunch is off camera, venison jerky like usual. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Lifting a 400 Pound (181 kilos) Log onto the Roof of a Log Cabin Alone

One eighteen foot ash log and two balsam fir logs averaging 44 pounds are what I have to lift onto the gable ends of the log cabin sauna, working alone and with minimal tools and no heavy equipment. This is exactly why I did NOT install full length ridge beams and purlins on the main log cabin and why I don't have a 6 foot overhang on the porch roof. It's just too heavy and too dangerous to do by myself. Plus, I go about this the wrong way in a futile attempt to protect two adjacent trees. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Build a Log Cabin Alone in the Frozen North with Hand Tools | Cedar Sauna Build Ep. 14
Build a Log Cabin Alone in the Frozen North with Hand Tools | Cedar Sauna Build Ep. 14
7 months ago
#logcabin #handtools #shelter Using mostly hand tools, I am building a Finnish sauna or Russian bathhouse with cedar logs in the Dick Proenneke style log cabin, and this week, I install the front porch overhang, the rear overhang and the gable end logs. I use ripping and crosscut handsaws, a log scribe, timber framing slick, chisels, mallets, hammers, log tongs and a drawknife to fit the logs in place, a chainsaw to cut them to length and a bubble level to make sure everything is level and plumb. So far, so good. At the end of the video, I cut down three balsam fir trees, 17 feet long, to use as full length ridge and purlin logs. The top course of wall logs are cedar and were spliced in the center of the long walls to extend 3 feet over the porch and 2 feet over the back wall. For dinner in the cabin, I make a simple stew with the venison that I bottled in January, fried with onions, garlic, bok choy, hot sauce and sauerkraut. I have the same leftovers for breakfast the following morning along with coffee with grass fed butter mixed in. After breakfast, I break up some chaga mushroom and add it to the kettle to simmer all day, frequently sipping the hot tea as I work outside in the cold. It's a full moon, and the forest is lit up like daylight in the dead of the cold night. The cabin is lit only by firelight tonight - candles, wood stove and lantern, and Cali, our golden retriever, sleeps soundly on her chair after a long, hard day of retrieving in the deep snow, snow that is now well over three feet deep. It's been a hard winter, lots of snow and many very cold days. Last year around this time, Makers Mark Branding sent me two branding irons of My Self Reliance logo. I lost one immediately, I think buried under the floor before I framed and installed the floor boards. I found the other in my tool storage in the outhouse, so I heated it up in the wood stove and branded the cherry cutting board that I made last week from the cherry tree that I cut down with an axe. At the end of the video, I talk about a childhood friend that just passed away suddenly at 48 years old and how that is impacting me and making me reflect on my own life and mortality. Log Cabin Sauna Build using Hand Tools, Ep. 13 | Wall Project | Duck Confit, Cast Iron Cooking
7 months ago
#sauna #logcabin #castiron Back to working on the log cabin suana, I finish the walls and place the top logs with porch extension to carry the roof and porch overhang. The weather is finally perfect for working on the Finnish sauna /Russian banya style bathhouse so I should be able to make headway this week, framing in the roof with full length logs. In the morning on the first day, I prepare duck confit, placing salted duck pieces in a cast iron pot and covering it completely with duck fat. It simmers on the wood stove with a medium fire for over ten hours until it's fall of the bone tender. I eat the duck back for lunch, fried in the cast iron pan, and then for dinner, I remove the two legs from the confit pot and fry them in the cast iron skillet with zucchini, onions, mushrooms and garlic and eat it with fermented sauerkraut. The following morning, I wake up to a lot of fresh snow, about 12 inches, thirty centimetres, over two days. I cook bacon and eggs for breakfast and then clean up and shovel the front deck before company arrives, which they do just before the video ends. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. #bushcraft #wilderness #logcabin Felling trees and moving heavy logs is quite the workout. This Cherry tree will provide beautiful wood for furniture in the log cabin and I cant wait to use it. With the help of my Ski Doo Tundra Ace 600, I move the wood back to the log cabin and remove the bark with my axe. From there, I make a small woodworking project which showcases the beautiful grain of the cherry wood. Side Note: I ran out of time editing this week so I apologize for the abrupt ending on this one. #offgrid #logcabin #woodworking I'm finally getting back to renovating the sleeping loft in the off grid log cabin, and building free wood railings with wood found in the forest is the first step. I use a drawknife to carve spindles from sugar maple and striped maple and insert them into a split maple hand rail. Building The Loft of the Log Cabin using Hand Tools | Axe, Cherry Tree, Ostrich, Snowshoeing

In need of building materials for the loft in the off grid log cabin and log sauna, Cali and I snowshoe through the deep snow in the forest to the grove of dead trees that burned in a lightening strike, seeking out a large black cherry tree that I have had my eye on for two years. I plan to mill it into planks and beams to renovate the sleeping loft, adding storage for clothes and more. I use an axe to cut down the tree - much more exhausting than I anticipated because the wood is seasoned and frozen. With few groceries left in the pantry, I cook an unusual meal of ground ostrich with onions, garlic, zucchini, celery and spices. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Please subscribe. We snowshoe through the forest and across a frozen lake to a great winter camping location beside a rock face where an overhang creates a perfect spot for a campfire to cook lunch. It's a late January thaw (February 3, 2019) so the snow is wet and it's freezing drizzle most of the day with temperatures hovering just above freezing. Cali watches as I build a fire and heat up lamb stew and water while talking about the Heavy Cover titanium canteen set that I'm giving away to a lucky subscriber. Wilderness Survival with my Dog | Solo Bushcraft, Woodworking Hand Tools, Axe, Log Cabin Loft
7 months ago
#bushcraft #logcabin #woodworking Join me and my dog as we survive frigid temperatures and a blizzard in the Canadian wilderness. I work solo on the interior of the log cabin, including adding log trim to the front door and a hand-railing for the sleeping loft in the cabin. I snowshoe through the deep snow to cut down trees for woodworking with traditional hand tools. I use a small carving axe to fix the handrail on the ladder to the loft and to split kindling for the fire. #logcabin #offgrid #winter Wind and snow continue to make life difficult for Cali and I as we deal with a harsh Canadian winter. Wind whips across the lakes and buffets the log cabin while I continue raising the walls of the log sauna before a Polar Vortex settles over the area for the next few days. Hot soup made with fresh walleye/pickerel and coconut milk cooked on the wood-fired stove in the off grid kitchen thaws me out before settling in for a cold, windy night in the cabin. Scouting a New Location For My Outpost Cabin
Scouting a New Location For My Outpost Cabin
8 months ago
Cali, my golden retriever, and I travel by snowmobile and by snowshoe to a new location to scout for game and a site for my outpost cabin in the Canadian wilderness. I explain why I need a remote hunt camp in addition to the land that the log cabin sites on and why there is more fish and game in the this forest. I start a campfire and reheat the beef shank and venison loin that I cooked on the wood stove a couple of nights before. My dog eats alongside me, finishing off the meat and fat left over from making bone broth. Around the fire, I talk about the titanium cookware that I'm using from Heavy Cover and I announce a giveaway that I'm doing - a Heavy Cover titanium canteen set, including a canteen with two lids, a cooking pot with lid and a spork (a spoon and fork combination tool). To qualify for the giveaway, please comment "Heavy Cover", hit the thumbs up and subscribe to the channel. This is not something I've ever done, so please bear with me as I figure out how to give this lightweight cooking set away. Log Finnish Sauna | Pemmican Recipe | Cabin Life | Canadian Wilderness
Log Finnish Sauna | Pemmican Recipe | Cabin Life | Canadian Wilderness
8 months ago
I continue building the Finnish style log sauna in the Canadian wilderness as the temperature plummets, thankful for the warmth of the wood stove in the cabin at night. The first day is silent with no wind, relatively mild temperatures just below freezing with ravens and chickadees circling my dog and I, looking for a free meal from the bones laying in the snow around the cabin. The following morning, a powerful wind develops, ushering in a deep freeze and a few more inches of snow on top of the 30 plus inches already on the ground. I cook walleye (pickerel) for dinner one night, a keto breakfast in the morning and braised beef shank, venison loin and ground deer meat for lunch and dinner the following day, all cooked on the woodstove inside the cabin. I open subscriber mail and gifts in front of the snow while Cali, my Golden Retriever, watches, looking for her share. On the second day, I make chaga tea from chaga mushrooms harvested from the yellow birch trees on my land. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Please subscribe. With some big changes in our lives in 2019, we're considering getting a new dog for the off grid, wilderness homestead. Cali is struggling in the deep snow and cold temperatures at the log cabin, following me while I snowshoe through the backcountry looking for firewood, lumber trees, chaga and wild game. Sauna Build Alone with My Dog in a Snowstorm | Bottling/Canning Meat over Fire
8 months ago
#sauna #logcabin #goldernretriever I continue with the sauna build, slowed down by a snowstorm one day and frigid temperatures the next, forcing me to pile the logs on top of the sauna walls and build a fire underneath to thaw them out. My dog, Cali the Golden Retriever, is at my side as always, relentlessly retrieving her training bumper until she falls asleep in front of the fire in the cabin. Inside the log cabin, I bottle (can) meat in a pressure canner on top of the wood-stove. I fry trout in cast iron on the woodstove and for breakfast, I continue my temporary ketogenic diet with a substantial meal of eggs, bacon and cheddar cheese fried in butter. To keep warm during the day while working on the log sauna, I place a cast iron pan on the fire inside the sauna under the tarp and logs and I heat up some leftover beef ribs and lamb shank in tomato sauce. #catchandcook #primitive #survival I harvest a deer and smoke a front shoulder of meat over the fire using primitive survival skills. After a long, frustratingl deer season full of mistakes, I finally connect so I make a tripod from green sugar maple to cure some of the meat by making jerky on a smoky fire. #logcabin #offgrid #DebtFree I finally calculate the cost of the log cabin that I built over the last year and I give a tour of the off grid cabin and the wilderness homestead, talking about what things cost to build as well as ongoing costs to live a wilderness lifestyle. I built this log cabin with cash and it is debt free - everything here is owned with no loans or mortgages. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Please subscribe. How to build a staircase with natural materials using a chainsaw. As I continue to finish the interior of the log cabin, I finally get around to building a wooden ladder to the sleeping loft. Cali, our Golden Retriever, tries out the bottom step, a slab of ash cut from a dead standing tree on the Canadian wilderness property. I cut and shape dowels of maple, birch and ash from the surrounding forest and use an Alaskan chainsaw mill to cut the stringers for the staircase as well as cordwood, log ends for steps. To keep warm in the unseasonably cold winter weather we are getting here on the American Thanksgiving, I roast a whole chicken with squash and potatoes on the wood stove. The fire is burning steady to fend off the bitter cold, down to -33 celsius, -27 Fahrenheit at night with the windchill and not much warmer during the day. A full moon lights up the cabin, but it's so cold that I only take a few pictures of the night sky before my camera battery dies from the cold. Follow the drone as it flies through the bitter cold, snowy Canadian wilderness, hovering over waterfalls and rivers. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Please subscribe. Can I Beat the Snow? | OFF GRID Log Cabin Sauna Ep8 | Canadian Wilderness
Can I Beat the Snow? | OFF GRID Log Cabin Sauna Ep8 | Canadian Wilderness
10 months ago
#logcabin #offgrid #canada The snow has temporarily melted, but can I beat the return of the snow and get the walls of the log cabin sauna high enough that deep snow won't effect the build? I'm getting into a rhythm and I'm able to notch and prepare at least one log per hour. The problem is, the days are short and we've been getting cold rain almost every day so I'm having a hard time getting much done. The weather forecasters are predicting a cold week coming up, with a lot of snow, so I have to continue raising the log walls while also managing my tools and building materials so that I don't lose them or have them frozen to the ground under the snow. Working on the log cabin alone in the Canadian wilderness is exhausting and I could use the bathhouse now. I'm really looking forward to firing up the wood fired heater in the sauna after a long day of chopping firewood or snowshoeing through the forest in pursuit of dinner. Thanks for watching! I speak openly about men's mental health in front of the fire while grilling an elk steak after a long morning of still hunting for deer through the forests of Canada. Please let Joe Rogan, Keegan Allen and Donald Trump Junior know that I have tagged them in Haze Outdoor's "Show Us Your Steak Challenge", encouraging men to speak about men's mental health and how it impacts their lives. On this day in 1918, the allies signed and Armistice agreement with Germany ending WW1. To this day, we celebrate that day as a reminder of the cost of freedom, in Canada we call it Remembrance Day, Veteran's day in America. Please thank a veteran and remember that the stress trauma often leaves indelible marks on the minds of our brave heroes and that those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder need our help and understanding. Mental illness comes in many forms and if we can speak openly about it, maybe we can end the stigma that those with mental illness deal with. Log Cabin Sauna Ep 6 | Canadian Wilderness Off Grid Living
10 months ago
#logcabin #offgrid #canada The ground and log cabin in the wilderness are blanketed in snow as I start building the walls up above the sill logs on the log bathhouse sauna. Wilderness living includes sourcing clean water for drinking and cleaning, and now that snow has arrived but with warm temperatures, I have many options for collecting it. I start the day off with a calorie rich breakfast of bacon, eggs, hashbrowns and sourdough rye toast before heading out in the cold to work craft the logs for the second course on the log cabin. The following morning, I talk about negativity and why it's important to overcome it and focus on making the best life you can without worrying about what other people are doing or what they think of you. I start collecting moss for the roof of the sauna but cold temperature and snow is making it difficult. I end the day by sitting in front of the fire with a chaga tea, watching the fire in the woodstove burn for several minutes before ending the video. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. #bear #cooking #offgrid Off grid cooking in the wilderness on the open fire or woodstove often involves wild game, natural materials and primitive techniques, including things like black bear meat, rendering fat for valuable cooking lard and grease for waterproofing and healing, making cutting boards out of maple trees and regulating hot fires for cooking things like corn bread on the wood stove. I Have a Question for You

The nights at the log cabin in the Canadian wilderness are getting cold, below freezing, and the water inside the wine and whiskey barrels will start to freeze, expand and bust the wood planks if I don't remove the water. Cali, our golden retriever dog, is perplexed by the sound of the water draining out of the oak wine barrel and tries to capture whatever is making the strange noise from underneath the barrel. I answer some viewer questions, like why do I char (burn) the wood that I'm building with, including the roof of the main log cabin, the base of the posts for the forest kitchen and the woodshed and the bottom logs of the log cabin bathhouse and sauna. Will I put in a wind turbine to generate electricity for the computer and filming equipment? Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Please subscribe. #logcabin #offgrid #goldenretriever In Episode 2, I prepare the foundation of the sauna, peel and move logs for the log cabin build and explain how I square up the building. It's a dog's life as I take Cali, our golden retriever, for long walks through the forest, along a big river and swimming in the cold lake. I catch a fish for dinner and cook that fish in the following episode. This episode is full of drone footage from our walks and shows more of the property that the cabin sits on and how the bathhouse is situated in relation to the cabin. Deer Meat Pie in a Primitive Clay Oven | What's with the Banjo?
Deer Meat Pie in a Primitive Clay Oven | What's with the Banjo?
#cooking #deer #wildgame Using meat from a whitetail deer I harvested with my bow, I make deer meat pie in the primitive earthen oven that I made with clay cob. Meat pie baked with the spices that I used is a traditional Quebec French recipe that dates back hundreds of years and was common in my family as my grandmother (my dad's mother) was French and lived on the the east coast of Canada. It is called "tourtiere" or "tortiere", named after the cooking vessel that it was baked in. Before bed in the log cabin, I open up the book that I learned how to play the banjo from when I was a kid and I start from page one, practicing cords and finger picking to see if I can get back to where I left off 30 years ago. I played banjo and guitar for about 7 years each when I was young. I played the guitar on and off over the years, but I haven't picked up the banjo in far too long to remember much of what I learned. The recipe for the tourtiere filling is as follows, although I made a lot of changes to suit my taste and availability of ingredients. 2 lbs venison, 1 cup of bread crumbs, 2 mushrooms, 1 onion, 1 bud of garlic, fresh sage, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, pepper, 3 cloves. Cook the meat thoroughly first and then put it in the pie crust and bake until the crust is golden. Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. Please subscribe. Winter is Coming! | Log Cabin Life

#logcabin #offgrid #winter Winter is coming and log cabin life is frantic for the next couple of weeks. I have a lot of projects that need to be finished, or ate least started before the snow starts falling and hiding the building materials. To make the wood-stove work more efficiently, I install a damper in the chimney pipe and paint it black while I have it torn apart. The ash tray underneath is leaking air so I install a washer on the handle so that it closes tighter. I finally cut down that dangerous leaning tree before I start building the sauna/bathhouse in it's path. Using ropes and log levers, I cut it down with handsaws while the wind blasts through the treetops. I level out the ground for the sauna and I start gathering and peeling cedar logs for the walls of the bathhouse. For lunch and dinner, I make rice and beans with tomato sauce, onions, garlic and hot sauce, cooked on the bbq. Cali, our golden retriever, has a marrow bone for dinner and curls up on the dining area bench to sleep for the night. Logging tool - www.thelogox.com Thanks for watching! New videos every FRIDAY. The leaves fall around me (almost all of them!) as I work around the log cabin, rebuilding the roof of the woodshed, stacking it full of firewood, and trying out a new log carrying tool as I clean up the logs and firewood piles around the property. Cali sleeps on the dining table bench in the evening while I catch up on all of your comments and review trail camera pictures on my laptop in front of the fire in the cabin. Thanks for watching! The BEST Week of the Year!
The BEST Week of the Year!

Venturing out from the log cabin, we take a Canadian road trip into the wilderness to relax in the splendor of nature. We send our drone over the forests and waterfalls of Canada to see the incredible fall colors in the forest and immerse ourselves in the ASMR sounds of the natural world. Our road trip takes us to the north coast of Lake Superior to watch rushing rivers spill over granite cliffs and through cobblestone beaches where trout and salmon are returning to the rivers to spawn. It is very relaxing and calming, like an ASMR film. I camp in two places along the rivers and Cali, our golden retriever, leads the way as we hike through canyons, along cliffs and wade through rivers and the great inland sea of Lake Superior. We explore a tiny Canadian Wilderness island in Lake Superior with a beautiful sand beach and smooth rock that tapers down into the cold, crystal clear waters of the lake. At the cabin, I split firewood and talk about what I'm doing this autumn around the cabin and I go for a walk to check out the beaver dam at the end of the meadow before going out on a canoe trip along the river to fish, camping along the way. This is a new video format for me, not something I'm changing to, but a format I like to do occasionally as it's very relaxing for me to make and watch. Thanks to my wife for filming with the drone, I couldn't do this without her. #logcabin #food #forest I visit the original cabin site from winter 2017 and dig out the logs from the undergrowth. We forage for more wild mushrooms and hike around the forest for small game - simple cabin life. Our dog, Cali the golden retriever, steps on one mushroom for every one we actually collect. Wild Mushroom Pasta and Bone Marrow in The Forest Kitchen at the Off Grid Log Cabin
Wild Mushroom Pasta and Bone Marrow in The Forest Kitchen at the Off Grid Log Cabin
Year ago
#bonemarrow #logcabin #cooking Foraging for wild edibles, we find chanterelle and bears head tooth mushrooms so we make a mushroom cream sauce on penne pasta with sides of sourdough cheese garlic bread and bone marrow on grilled sourdough toast with garlic. Everything is cooked in the outdoor kitchen on the stone BBQ and the in wood-fired earthen oven. It's a perfect autumn day with fall colors starting to pop, especially the red maples that are highly visible in the drone footage from above and alongside the trout stream and waterfalls. Safety Concern at the Off Grid Log Cabin in the Forest
Safety Concern at the Off Grid Log Cabin in the Forest
Year ago
#selfreliance #offgrid #LogCabin There are at least three dangerous trees standing near the cabin, and I finally cut them down for firewood and construction building materials, before they fall on their own and injure Cali, our Golden Retriever, or one of us. The huge sugar maple that stands over the bear/wolf crossing dam is one of the biggest and oldest on the property and it's been dead for a few years. The other tree was a yellow birch that I should have cut down last year when I first discovered it, with the iconic piece of chaga high up on the trunk. Ironically, soon after I cut these trees down, a wild storm blew through, spawning tornadoes east of here, and the potential for these trees to be blown over was high. Thanks for watching! One of the best video's I can honestly say that I have ever seen in bushcraft ever!! My God it's like we stepped back in time to the 18-1900's!! My husband and I stumbled upon you're site out of accident, and then couldn't turn it off! We honestly have never seen anyone so skilled in so many woodworking and building skills! No voices, little quiet music and the sounds of nature! We have definitely found something amazing to watch! Ty so much for taking us on you're journey! Fan's from Northern Michigan.

Your little cabin is just perfect right where it is. The way you are going you may end up with add on after add on. Soon you will have a complex you can make some money off of it and you retire back to the city life. You are doing a wonderful job with your property. Stay where you built your cabin with all the other buildings. You may have a regular community there for long. Envy of the forest. Your wife is so fortunate to have someone like you ,she will always have a home happy life. We love your little cabin ,we can't wait to see your new videos after you have built the screened porch and the loft inside the cabin. A beautiful sweet dog we all just love that dog. How he catters to you... Keep the good work up you will really have something one day. Probably worth a little change in your pockets. Thanks for your videos they are so relaxing I've been watching them for hours.

Well, I think eventually your tragedy happens to all of us, at some point in our lives. The window of my car was smashed in just two weeks ago, and all they found in the glove box was tooth picks and nothing more really. My camera, laptop and wallet are always with me in a backpack. They did, however, rummage thru my camping bin that I just leave in the back. Left my Coleman. Such a violation and such a lot of work to sort thru. So sorry you had to go thru this. My car alarm went off and the police arrived with a tracking dog, but the yahoo got away. Hope you are bacon track soon and best of luck.

Dick Proenneke, once told an interviewer, that the main reason he never took big game was because it was way more meat, then he could harvest, preserve and eat by himself. He said to much of it would have gone to waste, which he just couldn't bring himself to do, unless he just absoulutely had to. he said that he lived fine on the fish he caught, the small garden he grew, and the supplies he got, from the bush pilots.

People talking about hypocrisy. It seems to me it's just jealousy. I've been working on a primitive homestead on my place. I have 650 acres that I inherited from my grandfather. On it is a 60 acre lake he built back in the 50's after serving in WW2. I built my primary residence on it after retiring from the Army in 2013. 34 years. I enlisted in 1979 on my 17th birthday. I started this primitive project in 2017. Using an axe, hatchet, and knife. The cabin is a 16 x 24 with a loft. I cut and shaped the logs with the three tools. I built a fireplace last year. Living in south east Texas, the only stone I had to work with is sandstone and petrified wood. I built the firebox out of heat tempered sandstone. I faced it with petrified wood. The mortar is a clay/lime based mix. I got the lime from freshwater clam shells I burned and ground up with a sandstone mortar and pestle. This summer, I hand dug a well down to 30 plus feet. I curbed it with fired clay curbs I made myself. 4 feet wide by 2 feet high. I have the 'natural' garden in full production now. I found wild fruit and nut trees in the woods that grow wild around here. Pecan, hickory, persimmon, mayhaw, blackberries, wild strawberries, muscadine and scuppernong grapes. Wild onions and various wild herbs. I located wild bee hives and have them established in hives made from hollow cypress logs. I transplanted everything into a managable garden/grove system. There is an ancient salt dome under my property. So I trapped wild hogs. Keeping the weaning piglets. I have them raised and penned in with hickory and iron wood pole pens with split cypress logs set 2 feet in the ground to keep them from rooting out. They are trained well enough now that I can turn them out during the day and they come back to their log shelter at night. I butcher and cure fattenened hogs with natural salt and honey and smoke the hams and bacon in my log smokehouse with hickory I've decided on chickens next. They aren't available in the wild, but I love eggs, so... I worked out a trade with a neighbor. A couple gallons of wild honey for a starter flock of SexLinks.

The first thing I noticed is the BEAUTIFUL film quality. Also, my wife said the axe was pretty. She has never said that about any of my axes before. 😔

This is how we should all live, leave the horrible cities behind and enjoy life. This video reminds me of my brother and some friends fishing all day by a fresh water lake in South Australia, then cooking the catch on a camp fire and in a smoker oven over of the boys had made, then sleeping on the grass by the lake, so relaxing, and so not rushed like life in modern Melbourne.

How lovely to see Cali sharing a fishing afternoon with you. She rides very well in that canoe! Blue skies .... leaves beginning to turn color .... what a gorgeous day for the two of you to enjoy together. We all appreciate being able to enjoy it with you!
