Farmers defend accessing Farm Household Allowance during drought
Farmers defend accessing Farm Household Allowance during drought
Day ago
For drought-afflicted farmers across the country, the Farm Household Allowance provides vital support. Eligible farmers can claim the allowance for up to four years during a 10 year period. Barnaby Joyce recently caused a stir with his view that if that decade-long period doesn't deliver a profit for farmers, they should consider what they're doing with their lives. It's advice that's not sitting well with some of them. US troops leave Syria as Kurdish fighters & civilians withdraw from Turkey's 'safe zone' | ABC News
3 days ago
The United States has evacuated Sarrin military base - the last major US base in northern Syria - with convoys of American troops crossing into Iraq. US Defence Secretary Mark Esper said all US troops leaving Syria would go to western Iraq, where they would continue operations against the Islamic State. President Donald Trump previously stated he was "bringing soldiers home" after announcing the withdrawal earlier this month, a move that cleared the way for a Turkish offensive against Kurdish forces who fought alongside the US against IS. Just an hour after US troops moved through, the survivors of the brutal battle for the town of Ras al-Ain drove along the same road having finally been allowed to leave by Turkish-backed militias. The Kurdish withdrawal is critical to avoiding more attacks from Turkey when a US-brokered ceasefire expires on Tuesday. Local Kurds stood at the main intersection in Tal Tamr, which sits just outside a "safe zone" that Turkey said it would occupy, to protest the Turkish invasion. Hundreds of civilians have fled to the town over the past week to escape advancing Turkish forces. They were mostly silent as the US convoy drove past, although one man started a chant of "death to the betrayers". American activist Erin Brockovich has warned all levels of government in Australia to act swiftly to prevent the spread of PFAS chemical contamination, with more affected sites coming to light. ABC News has obtained a list of more than 60 locations identified by authorities in one state alone believed to be contaminated by the synthetic compounds. They include a prime parcel of riverfront real estate in Brisbane slated for a high-end residential development and a university campus currently under construction to the north of the city. Australian soldier fired on protesters in Afghanistan in 'self-defence', Defence confirms | ABC News
3 days ago
The Department of Defence has revealed for the first time that an Australian soldier fired on a crowd of demonstrators during a chaotic and deadly protest outside an Australian base in Afghanistan. The admission came after the ABC obtained a report from the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) that stated five civilians had been killed and six wounded during the protest near the forward operating base in Uruzgan province in 2010. At the time, NATO claimed only one protester was killed when he "aimed an AK-47" at foreign troops inside the base and that he was shot by an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member. But after the ABC asked Defence about the AIHRC's report of a higher civilian death toll, a spokesperson confirmed an Australian soldier shot at protesters. "Coalition soldiers, including an Australian, engaged the protesters in self-defence," the spokesperson said. Media unites to rally for press freedom: Taking the campaign to front pages and airwaves | ABC News

The nation's media companies have redacted their front pages to highlight the constraints on media organisations under strict national security legislation. National mastheads, including The Australian and the Financial Review, ran special covers on Monday morning arguing the media is subject to a regime of intense government secrecy and the threat of criminal charges for journalists doing their job. The nation's broadcasters began running campaigns on air during their Sunday prime time line-ups, depicting redacted Freedom of Information requests and arguing the media cannot fulfil its duty in keeping the public informed if its work is being hampered. The Right To Know coalition, of which the ABC is a member, is behind the campaign, calling for the decriminalisation of public interest journalism, and greater protection for the media and whistleblowers. It follows the Australian Federal Police (AFP) raiding the Canberra home of News Corp political journalist Annika Smethurst and the ABC's Sydney headquarters earlier this year. Leading political strategists on the left and right say Canada and Australia have the most similar electoral markets in the world. They've long swapped notes about their successes and failures. "Canada appears to have taken several lessons from the 2019 Australian election and Scott Morrison's victory," Canadian political scientist Clifton van der Linden said. Mr van der Linden founded Vote Compass, an interactive election tool that allows participants to match their views with the policies of the major parties. He's run it in conjunction with the ABC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation during three federal elections in each country. This year, more than 1.4 million people responded in both nations and the results give you a sense of the concerns in common. Victorian households could be separating rubbish into six or more bins - instead of the usual two or three - to help solve the state's recycling crisis. China's decision to stop importing foreign waste has forced Victoria to "urgently reconsider" how it deals with recycling. US troops in Syria 'come under fire' from Turkey, 100,000 flee as offensive intensifies | ABC News
12 days ago
The Pentagon has confirmed US troops in Syria have come under attack from the Turkish military. It's the first time a coalition base has been in the line of fire since turkey began its offensive earlier this week. The Pentagon says the artillery explosion came within a few hundred metres of an area where US troops are positioned. No troops were injured, but the Pentagon warned turkey must avoid actions that could result in immediate defensive action by the US. Turkey insists the US was not the target of the attack. It comes as US politicians introduce legislation calling for sanctions on Turkey amid condemnation from both Democrats and President Donald Trump's fellow Republicans over his Syria policy. The United States is suspending a tariff hike on $US250 billion in Chinese imports that was set to take effect on Tuesday, as the world's two biggest economies reached a ceasefire in their 15-month trade war. The superpowers are leaving the thornier issues - including US allegations that China forces foreign countries to hand over trade secrets in return for access to the Chinese market - until later negotiations. As Beijing takes a more combative stance against businesses that it accuses of supporting the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, protesters are upping a campaign of vandalism and boycotts against pro-Beijing businesses. And, they’re using maps and codes to label and target specific businesses. State-owned businesses are being trashed, while others that have voiced support for Beijing are being boycotted. But some have been caught in the cross-fire, and protesters have been forced to apologise and clean up after targeting pro-democracy or Hong Kong-owned businesses by mistake. Take a leaf out of what they do in Louisiana USA. My late husband died when I was 45. He wanted it to be a celebration. My mum was at the funeral home for 2 weeks in the uk . In USA they charge by the day. In less then a week my husband was cremated at a place the family don’t go to. Then you are given the ashes back. I found this to be less traumatic then when I watched my grandad at 18 in uk. At the crematorium. I live in USA now and I haven’t decided where I want to be scattered after I die.

Funerals are part of the grieving process for the living so a memorial of some sort is helpful in many ways. I have something about that in my Will so it's covered. I do wish that someone here in Oz offered a nice efficient freeze-drying, powdered and composting service though. Something less energy-intensive and environmentally neutral. My brother finds that mortifying and thinks you'd end up in China as powdered milk.

When you stop thinking of the corporate media as entertainment, and relabel it as a tool for marketing and propaganda, the World will make a lot more sense. In today's fabricated politics, there is very little difference between Left and Right. Usually both parties in each country (Australia - Liberal & Labor: Britain - Conservative & New Labor: US - Republican & Democrat) are owned and controlled by the plutocrats; and it is these same plutocrats who own and control the majority of the media. So when you see Ellen and a war criminal enjoying a game; just remember they work or have worked for the same people. The question you should be asking is who owns the box in which they are sitting?

What is the big deal??? Here in BC you can't smoke in any mall, government building, hotel or restaurant/pub. Of course you can smoke in your own home but many rental apartments are totally smoke free. People who don't smoke, don't want to smell the stink of cigarette/cigar smoke every time they come home. You can smoke outside, in a home that you own and of course on your own property but elsewhere...you rarely see someone smoking.

The people who apply this rule to smokers should apply it to the consumption of Alcohol which has far more negative impact on society and cost millions of dollars yearly in anti social behaviour, health etc....this is the thin edge of the wedge. I don't mind smokers in public areas - as long as they don't exhale it.

I’m in Japan at the moment. Why is Australia always an all or nothing solution? Setup smoking areas in the city like in the US and Japan. Let the smokers smoke there as they have the right to and none smokers don’t have to go there and don’t have to breath it in everywhere else. Everyone’s happy. Australia is always so one track minded with our solutions, it’s infuriating.

The majority rules and the majority don't smoke. Do it in your own home.

I get fed up with hearing smokers say “you’re taking away my rights” but clearly many have no regard for others rights. Yes you can smoke, but away from the public. Your dirty 2nd hand smoke in my lungs is disgusting and a health hazard. When anyone inflicts a health hazard onto someone, they are charged with a criminal offence. Why should this be any different ? Smokers, it’s time to make your habit private and safer.

I think it is a good idea. Singapore is another example of where smoking is policed very strictly (even chewing gum is not allowed). The Australian public are not aware, but the anti-smoking campaign has actually worked here in Australia.

Smoking is pleasant but no one can ignore that it kills. I quit a while back but I strongly believe banning is not a right move. In fact, I'm in favour of designated smoking areas even in shopping malls. At the moment, smoking is demonised in Australia. If it's going to be banned, then a nation wide ban is what we need and instead cheap and quality vaping could be encouraged.

I'm an ex-smoker, Smokers have the right to smoke, but eclipsing that right is the right to fresh air for everyone. I favour the Japanese smoking areas idea shown here.

if smoking is so deadly to none smokers then why doesn't the government ban them, smokes is more expensive than illicit drugs, as addictive as cocaine, cause god knows what cancers and long conditions yet the government endorses smoking with TAX

Yes, Japan has designated smoking areas but you can still smoke in bars and restaurants. Australia already has some of the toughest laws for smoking in public already, which Japan should try to follow.

When i was quitting i hated walking around a corner and getting slapped in the face by a cloud of smoke. Seems like every corner in the CBD has someone smoking outside their offices. I used to think whats the big deal if you're outside, but it is very intrusive to non-smokers.

The only place that I encounter second-hand smoke is in the CBD, I have to hold my breath walking past everytime (I get cleaner air going to the shopping centre!).

Councils have way too much power. I personally would like to see someone stab the councillor. My theory is that people who try to take the rights of others should learn that they are not infallible and should have their rights removed. A stab wound affects a persons right to good health. A right removed by a decision made by another. Anyone see my point? The context is the same.

While I believe that people have the right to do whatever they want as long as it's legal, I also believe that people who chose to inflict cigarette smoke on others are taking away the rights of others who would prefer to not be exposed to such things. There has to be a middle ground. Designated smoking areas may be a great place to start, But I do believe that for the health and well being of the entire country that cigarettes should eventually be banned. The government has no interest in helping those struggling with addiction, but instead would rather exploit their illness to to make money off of their taxes with no regard for their health or well being. You cannot argue with science. Smoking, both first and second hand, kills. Yes, other things also add to air pollution but the argument that we cannot deal with one problem because there are other problems out there that are potentially just as bad, if not worse than smoking is immature and unhelpful. Whether smokers like it or not their addiction effects those around them, and those effects should be taken into consideration. So to should the behaviour of the government that prays on those suffering from addiction. If you are a smoker you can and should quit, not just for those around you, but for yourself your health and your quality of life. It's not worth it.

Does this council support "safe injecting rooms" and "pill testing" and "making marijuana smoking legal"? What are this Councils views on alcohol and gambling? What about littering?
