NASA's first chance at launching American astronauts into space from US soil in nine years has been postponed due to the threat of the launch triggering lightning strikes. The launch would have seen the bullet-shaped Dragon capsule lift off from the same site as the Apollo moon missions decades ago. The capsule was sitting atop a Falcon 9 rocket, both of them engineered by Elon Musk's SpaceX team, before the call came through to abort the mission. US hits 100,000 coronavirus deaths milestone. According to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center the death toll climbed to 100,047 on Friday morning (AEST), accounting for more than 28 per cent of the world's confirmed tally. The accuracy of the numbers has been debated in the US. The most recent death data is gathered through searches of preliminary reports that doctors send to state and local health departments. Those numbers appear on different websites, including those of government agencies, some news organisations and the widely shared Johns Hopkins site. Also, US President Donald Trump has threatened to regulate or shut down social media companies, a day after Twitter attached a warning to some of his tweets prompting readers to fact check the president's claims. Mr Trump has again accused Twitter of bias, tweeting: "Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen." The president, who has more than 80 million followers on Twitter, then added: "Clean up your act, NOW!!!!" An armed man has been shot by police on Melbourne's Monash Freeway after what a witness described as a "stand-off". Victoria Police said officers were called to the on-ramp of the freeway at the Eastlink interchange at Dandenong North following initial reports that a man was armed about 9:30am. "It is believed responding officers were negotiating with the man when he was shot by police and died at the scene," a police spokesperson said. "Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the incident which will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command, as per protocol when a police firearm is discharged." A witness who identified himself as Ben called into ABC Radio Melbourne earlier and described the incident as "stand-off" between a man aged about 50 or 60 and police. "They had guns drawn on the assailant," Ben said. "I don't know if it was a pursuit and they have pulled him up over there or why he's in that position." A VicTraffic alert said: "Emergency services are on scene and directing traffic. If you're heading towards Melbourne from the south-east, exit the Monash Freeway and use the Princes Highway instead. Allow extra time." Four Minneapolis police officers have been fired after one of them was filmed kneeling on the neck of an unarmed black man who later died in hospital. The video, shot by bystanders, shows the man pleading for help as a white officer kneels on his neck. "Please, please, please, I can't breathe. Please, man," the man is heard telling the officer. The incident, which happened on Monday, is under investigation by the FBI and state law enforcement authorities. It has drawn comparisons to the case of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died in 2014 in New York after he was placed in a chokehold by police. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said the decision to sack the officers involved in the arrest was "the right call", and apologised to the black community. Fogg Dam is cane toad research’s ground zero and no-one knows Fogg Dam like Dr Greg Brown | ABC News
4 days ago
On most nights you'll find Dr Greg Brown, notebook in hand, walking the abandoned wall at Fogg Dam, a 45-minute drive east of Darwin. It's a walk the Macquarie University post-doctoral research fellow has taken more than 4,000 times over the past 22 years. Into the notebook, Dr Brown is meticulously recording, to the best of his ability, all the animals he sees in the monsoonal floodplains - a landscape host to one of the world's highest biomass of predator (water pythons) to prey (dusky rats) ratios. "It turned into this monstrous, wonderful data set of activity of tropical animals," Dr Brown says. "A lot of the things that I see I just make a note of: there's a water python, there is a death adder, there is a possum. But the things that I study more in depth, the keel backs [freshwater snakes] and the slaty-grey snakes - if I see one of them, I have to dart after it." True to his word, Dr Brown dives onto a pile of leaves and emerges with a snake, as a pair of wild buffalo and a freshwater crocodile watch on from the water. "When I catch them I take them back to the lab and mark them - little scars on specific scales so I know who each individual is," Dr Brown says. "I know how much they have grown, what the average growth rate is, whether they had eggs and how many. "When you get a lot of information from a lot of different snakes, then you can start to get a picture." Dr Brown's interest in herpetology is far from a hobby - eminent biologist and Macquarie University Professor Rick Shine calls the researcher a "freakishly good field worker". "He's been prepared to get out there on the dam wall every evening," Professor Shine says. "Night after night, year after year, to give us that really comprehensive data set on exactly what's happening with fauna of the Top End across the last two decades." US declares Hong Kong no longer merits special status under US law | ABC News

US Secretary of State of Mike Pompeo has advised the US Congress that the Trump administration no longer regards Hong Kong as autonomous from mainland China. His note to the US Congress sets the stage for Washington to withdraw preferential trade and financial status that the former British colony has enjoyed since it reverted to Chinese rule in 1997. "Hong Kong does not continue to warrant treatment under United States laws in the same manner as US laws were applied to Hong Kong before July 1997," Mr Pompeo said in a statement. Mr Pompeo's decision was not accompanied by a revocation of any specific privileges but comes amid calls for the US and others to react against Beijing's move to impose Chinese national security laws over Hong Kong, which are aimed at forbidding secessionist and subversive activity, as well as foreign interference and terrorism. It's nearly 10 weeks since Australia began shutting its borders, businesses and schools. So far those measures have worked brilliantly, with this country performing incredibly well on international comparisons. But there's so much that's unknown about coronavirus, and without a vaccine, we're still vulnerable to future outbreaks. UK PM's top adviser Dominic Cummings says he 'doesn't regret' breaking corona lockdown | ABC News
6 days ago
Boris Johnson's most senior adviser has refused to apologise for driving more than 400 kilometres during the UK's strict coronavirus lockdown to stay at his parents' property. Dominic Cummings, who is credited with helping deliver the Prime Minister a resounding 2019 election victory, said he believed he had not broken the lockdown rules and acted "reasonably" by travelling from his London home to County Durham in the country's north with his child and his wife, who had developed COVID-19 symptoms. The trip was at odds with Mr Johnson's lockdown order that all Britons "must stay at home" to stop the spread of the disease. "I did what I thought was the right thing to do," Mr Cummings said during a highly unusual press conference in the gardens of 10 Downing Street. He said he and his wife decided they should go and stay in an isolated cottage on his father's farm so that his 17-year-old niece could look after his son if necessary. Mr Cummings fell ill while they were there, as did his son, who briefly went to hospital. Asked whether he tried to find a childcare option in London before leaving, he said he did not think it would have been reasonable to ask friends to expose themselves to the virus. Mr Cummings said he left London soon after learning that Mr Johnson had tested positive for the new coronavirus in late March. He said he wanted to make sure his son would be looked after by family members if he or his wife fell seriously ill. "The rules make clear that when dealing with small children that can be exceptional circumstances, and I think that was exceptional circumstances," the 48-year-old said. Mr Cummings had been accused of making multiple trips during his stay in Durham but said the reports were false. But he did admit driving about 50km to the historic town of Barnard Castle. He said he drove to the local beauty spot with his wife and son because his eyesight had been affected by his illness and they wanted to check he would be able to undertake the journey back to London. Where's all the medicos input? the people I see aren't doctors or scientists!, What seems to be overlooked is the fact the covid#19 virus isn't going to disappear anytime soon it will be still with us. And where's the updates for a serrum to immunize people against the covid#19 virus or has it been shelved? out of sight out of mind!! Or isn't the government backing any research to develope a serrum because it's too expensive?.💀

So just to take a step back. Australia was building a huge debt bubble for the last 4-5 years. While covid has been used as a great opportunity to let that bubble burst. My question is, will the banks, corporations and political players actually accept any responsibility for the economic position we as a nation now face?

There was tons of panic shopping in Canada and the US. Some one is not in touch with reality. Giggle. Small business in the both countries are going down due to the shut down. People are committing suicide, domestic abuse has gone way up, child abuse has gone up, homelessness is increasing as well, job losses are massive, farmers are also suffering big time and the list goes on and on.
