Statues depicting Confederate leaders, colonial figures, and enslavers are being taken down amid anti-racism protests. As the Black Lives Matter movement has shifted people’s views on the US’ history of racism, protesters also demand the removal of the Emancipation Memorials, commemorating slavery’s end. To clarify a point that may have been implied by a speaker in this video: Historians widely agree that slavery was the principal reason for the Civil War. Editor's Note: An earlier version of this video was removed because it misstated that Thomas Jefferson wrote into the Constitution "all men are created equal." It was not in the Constitution, but the Declaration of Independence. ------------------------------------------------------ #Protests #Statues #BusinessInsider Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, retail, and more. The risk of becoming exposed to the COVID-19 coronavirus increases in some cases and decreases in others. As more parts of the country start reopening during the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, Dr. Susan Hassig, an epidemiologist at Tulane University, shares how to think about managing the risk of everyday activities for yourself. She recommends analyzing situations by looking at the distance you will be able to maintain with others, the diversity of households in the area, and the duration of your activity and interactions. All of this can change if you are high risk or interacting with someone who is high risk, as even moderate situations can lead to major consequences. President Trump's coronavirus task force press briefings are known for his tense interactions with reporters. The president often responds to questions from the White House press corps with deflection and diversion. We asked Kent Zimmermann, a legal analyst and former attorney, to reveal courtroom tactics that lawyers would use in similar situations. One approach is treating the president as a so-called "hostile witness." Once a witness is designated as hostile by a judge in a courtroom setting, the attorney is permitted to ask "leading questions," which can steer a witness toward necessary answers. The coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the global economy, with more than 20 million Americans out of work. However, the stock market remains open for business, and it has seen historically dramatic swings in the last eight weeks. For those fortunate enough to receive a steady paycheck amid the crisis, now might be a good time to cautiously consider investing in equities. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan talked to two world-renowned financial experts: Ellevest CEO and former Citigroup CFO Sallie Krawcheck, and Professor of Finance at the Stern School of Business at NYU Aswath Damodaran. He asked them for guidance about investing in equities, managing longterm accounts like 401(k) plans, and advice for people who received stimulus checks from the U.S. government. Flanagan also talked to Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a multimillionaire known for sports gambling who decided to try day trading in the stock market after the coronavirus cancelled all sports leagues. At the time of the interview, Portnoy told Flanagan that he had lost over $700,000. While President Donald Trump says the economy will take off like a rocket when social-distancing guidelines end, the Congressional Budget Office estimates an unemployment rate of 9% at the end of 2021. In fact, economists think the US might already be at 15% unemployment. With parts of the economy like restaurants, sporting events, movie theaters, and concerts unlikely to be able to go back to 100% capacity for months or longer, it may be hard to bring the unemployment level back down to full employment rapidly. Why Spacesuits Are So Expensive | So Expensive
Why Spacesuits Are So Expensive | So Expensive
2 months ago
NASA's current fleet of spacesuits was built in 1974, and each was reported to cost between $15 million and $22 million. Today, that would be about $150 million. Having not built any new mission-ready extravehicular suits since then, NASA is running out of spacesuits. In fact, NASA is down to just four flight-ready EVA suits. Since 2009, NASA has invested more than $200 million in spacesuit development, recently unveiling the xEMU prototype for its Artemis program, which plans to take humans back to the surface of the moon by 2024, with a view to eventually go to Mars. With that goal fast approaching - and the number of existing spacesuits dwindling - NASA engineers face a new kind of space race. Meanwhile, commercial space company Final Frontier Design is developing its own EVA spacesuits and plans to build new units at much lower costs than NASA. So, why has it taken so long for new spacesuits to be built? And what makes them so expensive? As COVID-19 spreads around the world, some countries' timelines look different from others. With a combination of contact tracing, testing, and isolating cases, along with other physical distancing policies, places like South Korea were able to reduce the size of its coronavirus outbreak and flatten the curve. But many other countries have seen the number of new cases grow exponentially. Countries that didn't start testing and tracing early have had a harder time reducing the number of daily new coronavirus cases. In 1999, President Clinton ordered the formation of the Strategic National Stockpile - a series of warehouses in secret locations filled with medical supplies and personal protective equipment to be used in case of a natural disaster or health emergency. Since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Stockpile has already distributed about 90% of its resources, according to federal officials. We asked the Department of Health and Human Services why the Stockpile didn't have enough resources to meet the demand for PPE required by healthcare professionals fighting COVID-19 on the front lines. According to a HHS spokesperson, the Stockpile wasn't designed for an event of this magnitude. However, thanks to billions in newly allocated funds from Congress and private contracts to replenish the Stockpile's warehouses, some much-needed help is on the way. Why Horse Semen Is The World’s Most Expensive Liquid | So Expensive
2 months ago
Depending on the stallion, horse semen is one of the most expensive liquids on the planet. A gallon of gold-medal-winning Big Star's semen is worth $4.7 million. But that's nowhere near the most expensive! Once it's collected, horse semen can be sold in small tubes called straws, each containing 150 million to 200 million sperm cells. These straws can sell for thousands of dollars. In the horse-breeding world, genetics is king. Wealthy investors are willing to pay high prices for a proven winner's semen, hoping that the resulting foal provides a large return on investment. But even though most stud farms offer guarantees on producing a live foal, commercial and competitive success is still a gamble, even with strong genetics. The COVID-19 crisis is changing the way future United States Marines are trained at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, SC. According to anonymous defense officials who spoke to the Washington Post, between 20 to 50 positive cases have been confirmed at the Depot. According to a Recruit Depot spokesperson, some of the cases were discovered in the recruit population. Beginning March 30, the Recruit Depot suspended the shipping of new recruits to Parris Island. When shipping resumes, new recruits will be held in a 14-day "staging" period before they begin processing ahead of training. These recruits will be medically screened multiple times per day. Due to the crisis, physical distancing measures are being implemented in dining facilities and "squad bays" where recruits sleep However, training will continue for recruits already in Parris Island, with physical distancing measures being implemented at the discretion of the drill instructors. Although graduations will continue to occur, visitors are prohibited from attending. The COVID-19 crisis is changing the way future Army soldiers are trained at the Fort Benning military base near Columbus, Ga. As of March 29, six confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been connected to Fort Benning. According to the Army, the patients were not part of training operations. Due to the crisis, some aspects of training that involve physical contact have been suspended, and physical distancing is being applied to exercises that will continue to occur. New medical screenings have been incorporated into the reception of the hundreds of soldiers that arrive every week to begin their training. All visitors are prohibited from attending graduation ceremonies, and recent graduates are being held at Fort Benning for the immediate future instead of being shipped to their new units. How Long Will Social Distancing Last? It's Complicated

To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus and flatten the curve, many countries are practicing social distancing, or what the WHO is now calling physical distancing. The virus is transmitted via respiratory droplets, so maintaining physical distance from people can help protect you and others. People are staying inside, working from home, and only going out for essential activities. But how long will this period of social distancing last? Unfortunately, no one knows for sure. The answer is complicated, and it partly depends on our actions. The increase in electric vehicles and hybrids on roads has also increased the risk of collision with pedestrians and cyclists. Since we have become used to the sound of engines alerting us to a car's presence, the silence of electric cars has caused safety concerns. To mitigate this risk the U.S. and Europe have passed a new regulation that requires EV's to emit a sound while driving under 18.6 mph or 30 kph to replace the sound of an engine. Automakers like BMW, Volkswagen, and Nissan are working with music composers to design sounds for their EVs. A composer from Man Made Music group guides us through their process of designing the sound for the Nissan LEAF. Here's an inside look at the United States Army's intense 22-week basic training known as OSUT, which stands for One Station Unit Training. Senior Video Correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days at the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence located inside the Fort Benning military installation near Columbus, Georgia, where he observed different companies at various stages of training. After a processing period that takes one to two weeks, recruits experience what's known as a "shark attack," when drill sergeants create a high-stress environment through a series of rapid-fire instructions and commands. Once the intensity subsides and training begins, the dynamic between the drill sergeants and the recruits evolves into one found between a teacher and students in a classroom. Despite rainy conditions that rarely let up during filming, we saw various dynamic aspects of training, such as marksmanship, tear gas exposure, and MOUT, which stands for military operations in urban terrain. In the video, we incorrectly refer to duffle bags as rucksacks. Insider regrets the error. Although Tesla reigns as king of the EV market thanks to its Model 3, Volkswagen has a plan in place to outsell them in the next few years. The automaker has set its sights on becoming a major name in the EV game, investing $37 billion in its electric car program. Between its production plans, new lineup of plug-in vehicles, and $2 billion marketing plan for emissions free cars, this car giant could easily be on its way to outselling Elon Musk. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, or "Mounties," are known for their iconic uniforms that feature the iconic scarlet tunic referred to as the "Red Serge." Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan visited the RCMP Academy Depot Division in Regina, Saskatchewan where future Mounties are trained and issued their uniform "kit." While modern Mounties' everyday uniforms are more in line with standard police attire, the wool and satin-lined Red Serge is still used for ceremonial events. Each cadet gets fitted for their tunic about halfway through training. We visited the tailor shop where a team of 20 tailors performs the alterations for the approximately 1,000 cadets that graduate from the Academy each year. We also stopped by the leather shop, where leather crafters custom-fit each pair of high-leather Strathcona boots before being issued to the cadets. Supermodel Maye Musk's new book, "A Woman Makes A Plan," details how she found her way as a mother, businesswoman, and model. Musk, the mother of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, says the way she raised her children was very similar to the way she was raised. She always worked as a mother and she let her children see that and be a part of it. She encouraged them to follow their passions and to help people. Musk says that ageism in media and other industries is primarily a problem for women. She says women are neglected as they get older, which is not the case for men. She believes women should make up half of all CEOs and presidents and thinks it would make for a kinder and gentler world. We got an inside look at the intense 26-week training program that all future Mounties must endure before officially joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days at the RCMP Academy, Depot Division in Regina, Saskatchewan where he observed different troops at various stages of training. The training is focused on mastering police procedure, but cadets are also put through intense physical challenges, such as entering a gas chamber and enduring a “uniform run” with a dog handler in sub-zero temperatures. Male and female cadets train together at Depot, and even square off against each other in Police Defensive Tactics training. The future Mounties also learn about RCMP customs and traditions dating back to the 19th century, culminating with the Regimental Dinner - a ceremony that, according to the RCMP, media had not been allowed to attend before this film shoot. Editor's note: In the video, we incorrectly identify Yukon and Nunavut as Canadian provinces, when they are in fact classified as territories. We regret the error. On the outside, school buses haven't changed much in almost 100 years, and there's a reason for that. A 1939 conference determined the yellow color, black text, and boxy shape that have come to symbolize the iconic childhood transport. Buses have changed a lot on the inside since the conference and they continue to be the safest way to get to school - about 70 times safer than a car, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Nominated this year for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, the film "Ford v Ferrari" tells the story of the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world's most prestigious endurance race. While the movie covers the race's underlying rivalry between auto giants Ford Motor Company and Ferrari, its true focus is on the two men, played by Matt Damon and Christian Bale, who helped develop Ford's racing program and establish the American automaker as a force to be reckoned with on the track. In the early '90s, Nintendo dominated the video game industry, holding over 90% of the market. It would be foolish to challenge that dominance, but that’s exactly what Sega did. With an aggressive marketing campaign and a new star in Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega solidified itself as a top contender in the industry and a force to be reckoned with. However, its reign at the top was short-lived, as it eventually caused its own downfall with a series of tragic mistakes. Here’s how Sega rose to the top and then plummeted to the bottom. Ian Bremmer, president and founder of Eurasia Group, discusses the most important issues at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Climate is at the top of the agenda this year, but Bremmer said CEOs are having more discussions about the very likely possibility of an economic slowdown. Bremmer says if you want businesses to focus on sustainability, you have to figure out how to make sustainability good for business. When you think of Apple you probably think of the iPhone. But just 15 years ago, its hit product was the iPod. The iPod changed the way we listen to music and helped grow Apple into one of the biggest companies in the world. But the iPod went from accounting for almost half of Apple's revenue to not even being promoted by the company. Today, the only iPod Apple sells is the iPod touch, having discontinued the iPod Classic, Nano, and Shuffle. Faraday Future, a California-based electric-car startup and Tesla's once rival, generated buzz in 2015 as the company poached top talent from Tesla, BMW, Audi, Ford, and Ferrari. Called "Tesla killer," Faraday’s meteoric rise in notoriety occurred on dubious underpinnings - the company did not promise a product, nor did it announce any concrete plans for its first few years of operation. The mystery surrounding Faraday was only matched by its enigmatic cofounder and CEO, Jia "YT" Yueting, the billionaire businessman who founded multiple telecom companies in China but left abruptly to become the CEO of Faraday. We took a look at YT and Faraday Future's promise, the financial woes that led them both to bankruptcy, and YT's relationship with the reanimated Faraday today. I know it’s an old video but to clarify... there was no party switch. It’s hard to think how millions of people would consensually agree to change the title of the party they represent, especially if they want to keep the reputation of their party (Republican Party freed the slaves, why would they hand over that title to the dems?) What occurred is that once the Democratic south lost the war, they couldn’t make money off of using slaves anymore, so they moved north to get industrial jobs that the north built (industrial revolution), and all the Republicans in the north saw opportunity to expand their industries to the south.... see how this migration occurred? Ask yourself next time, how did the ‘switch’ occurred? Most dems won’t know the explanation behind it cause it never happened.
